Candies
Colorful, chewy, sugary, fragrant and… irresistible! Yes, we admit it: taking these images for Lindt and resisting Candies was difficult.
But what is the history of candyes? How did they come to our days crossing centuries and eras? We did a little research and found out that their birth dates back as far as the 11th century, with origins in the Far East. It was, in fact, the Crusaders who brought to Europe around the year one thousand bars called “Canna mellis,” a name that has since morphed into our “Candies.”
Another theory attributes the birth of the first candy to fourth-century India: the Khanda, made by boiling cane sugar. Once solidified it was cut into slices and enjoyed just as we do with candy today.
Initially used for medicinal purposes (against sore throats and heartburn), we have to wait until the 1800s for the start of actual candy production, and the next century for it to become an everyday product.

Colorate, gommose, zuccherine, profumate e… irresistibili! Sì, lo ammettiamo: scattare queste immagini per Lindt e resistere alle Gelee è stato difficile.
Ma qual è la storia delle caramelle? Come sono arrivate ai nostri giorni attraversando i secoli e le epoche? Ci siamo documentati un po’ e abbiamo scoperto che la loro nascita risale addirittura all’XI secolo, con origini nel lontano Oriente. Furono, infatti, i Crociati a portare in Europa intorno all’anno mille delle barrette chiamate “Canna mellis”, un nome che si è poi trasformato nel nostro “Caramelle”.
Un’altra teoria attribuisce all’India del IV secolo la nascita della prima caramella: la Khanda, ottenuta dall’ebollizione dello zucchero di canna. Una volta solidificato veniva tagliato a fette e gustato proprio come oggi facciamo con le caramelle.
Inizialmente utilizzate per scopi medici (contro il mal di gola e il bruciore di stomaco), dobbiamo aspettare il 1800 per l’avvio della produzione vera e propria di caramelle, e il secolo successivo perché diventino un prodotto d’uso quotidiano.
