La principessa ranocchia
C’era una volta un re che doveva decidere a chi dei tre suoi figli avrebbe ereditato il regno. Siccome erano in età da matrimonio fece loro costruire una balestra e gli ordinò di scagliare una freccia; la fanciulla che avrebbero raggiunto con quella freccia sarebbe diventata la loro sposa. E così fecero: al maggiore capitò una bella principessa, al secondo la figlia di un re potentissimo ma la freccia del figlio più giovane cadde in uno stagno e questo stagno era abitato da una rana. Il principe, che si chiamava Ivan, accettò, sebbene tristemente, il suo destino e sposò la rana.
A questo punto il re decise di mettere alla prova le tre mogli per verificare chi avesse migliori doti; la prima prova consisteva nel tessere una camicia.
Compito assai semplice per le mogli dei primi due fratelli, ma per la principessa rana? Tutto avrebbe fatto pensare ad una vittoria certa delle due e invece il mattino della prova il principe Ivan trovò accanto al letto una camicia talmente benfatta che vinse la prova.
Ma i fratelli sollevarono molti dubbi sul fatto che una rana potesse diventare la regina e così convinsero il padre a proseguire con le prove; la seconda consisteva nel preparare la più deliziosa delle pagnotte. I fratelli di Ivan questa volta si fecero furbi e mandarono una spia a vedere quale fosse il segreto della rana e per copiare le sue mosse. La rana, che era rana ma non stupida, si accorse di tutto e preparò in modo grossolano una pagnotta la buttò nel fuoco facendola bruciare. Quando la spia se ne andò, tirò fuori tutto e si adoperò per la pagnotta vera.
Il giorno seguente Ivan portò al padre una pagnotta squisita mentre i due fratelli, le cui mogli avevano seguito le istruzioni della spia, consegnarono pagnotte bruciate.
Il re non aveva più dubbi ma acconsentì nel dare loro un’ultima possibilità e organizzò un ballo al palazzo per vedere chi delle tre mogli avesse più grazia e talento nella danza.
La sera del ballo il principe Ivan era molto preoccupato ma la rana lo rassicurò e lui si recò per primo alla festa.
Ad un certo punto durante la serata ci fu un rumore pazzesco e tutti si spaventarono molto, ma il principe Ivan li tranquillizzò: “è solo la mia piccola rana che sta arrivando”. Ed era proprio così ma invece che entrare la rana, nella stanza entrò una bellissima principessa che si prodigò in danze meravigliose accompagnate dall’apparizione di foreste, ruscelli e uccellini. E certo non ci fu chance per le altre due mogli.
Quando il principe Ivan la vide così bella corse subito a bruciare la sua pelle di rana, ma il gesto irruento gli costò caro: la principessa infatti sparì insieme alla sua pelle.
Passò molto tempo e il principe Ivan non riusciva a darsi pace così un giorno decise di mettersi in cammino e andare a cercare la sua principessa. Si dovette spingere nel regno più lontano dei regni per incontrare finalmente un vecchio che gli disse come fare per trovare la principessa, ossia lanciare una palla e seguirla fino alla casa di una strega.Il principe Ivan senza indugio seguì la palla che lo portò alla casina che aveva detto il vecchio. Per voltarsi e farlo entrare la casina doveva essere implorata da lui con una formula precisa e Ivan eseguì.
La strega che l’abitava diede delle nuove istruzioni, sempre più complesse, alle quali Ivan si affidò senza più dubbi con la sola preoccupazione di fare in tempo ad incontrare la sua bella prima che si sposasse con il suo nuovo pretendente.
E così arrivò alla seconda casina e fece con attenzione tutto quanto gli era stato detto.
Ed ecco che, dopo i vari rituali, magicamente apparve dinanzi a lui la sua amata che ancora serbava in cuore amore per lui. Si abbracciarono e saliti sul tappeto volante tornarono finalmente nel loro regno per vivere insieme felici e contenti.
Once upon a time there was a king who had to decide who of his three sons would inherit the kingdom. Since they were of marriageable age he had them build a crossbow and ordered them to shoot an arrow; the girl they reached with that arrow would become their bride. And so they did: the elder had a beautiful princess, the second the daughter of a very powerful king but the youngest son’s arrow fell into a pond and this pond was inhabited by a frog. The prince, whose name was Ivan, accepted, albeit sadly, his fate and married the frog.
At this point the king decided to test the three wives to see who had the best gifts; the first test consisted in weaving a shirt.
A very simple task for the wives of the first two brothers, but for the frog princess? Everything would have made us think of a certain victory of the two and instead on the morning of the test Prince Ivan found next to the bed a shirt so well made that he won the test.
But the brothers raised many doubts as to whether a frog could become the queen and so convinced their father to continue with the tests; the second was to prepare the most delicious of loaves. Ivan’s brothers got smart this time and sent a spy to see what the frog’s secret was and to copy his moves. The frog, who was a frog but not stupid, noticed everything and coarsely prepared a loaf of bread and threw it into the fire making it burn. When the spy left, he pulled everything out and worked for the real loaf.
The next day Ivan brought his father a delicious loaf while the two brothers, whose wives had followed the spy’s instructions, delivered burnt loaves.
The king no longer had any doubts but agreed to give them one last chance and organized a ball at the palace to see which of the three wives had the most grace and talent in dance.
On the evening of the ball, Prince Ivan was very worried but the frog reassured him and he went first to the party.
At some point during the evening there was a crazy noise and everyone got very frightened, but Prince Ivan reassured them: “it’s just my little frog that is coming”. And it was just like that, but instead of entering the frog, a beautiful princess entered the room who did her utmost in wonderful dances accompanied by the appearance of forests, streams and birds. And certainly there was no chance for the other two wives.
When Prince Ivan saw her so beautiful she immediately ran to burn her frog skin, but her impetuous gesture cost him dearly: the princess in fact disappeared along with her skin.
A long time passed and Prince Ivan could not find peace so one day he decided to set out and go to look for his princess. He had to go into the farthest realm of kingdoms to finally meet an old man who told him how to find the princess, that is to throw a ball and follow her to the house of a witch.Prince Ivan immediately followed the ball that led him to the little house that the old man had said. To turn around and let him enter the little house had to be implored by him with a precise formula and Ivan did it.
The witch who lived there gave new instructions, more and more complex, to which Ivan relied without doubts with the sole concern of having time to meet her beautiful woman before she married her new suitor.
And so he came to the second little house and carefully did everything he was told.
And here, after the various rituals, her beloved one magically appeared before him, still cherishing love for him in her heart. They hugged and climbed on the flying carpet finally returned to their kingdom to live happily ever after.
